Benefits and Side Effects of
Anti Anxiety Medication
To calm a person down that is going through a serious
panic attack, some type of anti anxiety medication is
needed. Often, tranquilizers are used but for anxiety and panic
attacks, they only work short-term rather than fix the
underlying problem. Additionally, many anti anxiety medications
cause side effects. For instance, a person might experience a
variety of reactions from the medication and while most create
a sense of calm and peace, sometimes anti anxiety medications
can make a person feel tired all the time.
The most common side effects reported by people that take
anti anxiety medication include poor coordination, ongoing
fatigue, and slow reflexes, caused by chemicals in the brain
being blocked. In fact, some people have complained about
feeling confused, dizzy, disoriented, and having a feeling of
impaired reasoning. Because of this, driving, operating heavy
machinery, or making important decisions is never recommended.
Unfortunately, in rare instances, people taking anti anxiety
medication have also experienced suicidal thoughts and
depression. The truth is that most of these drugs help,
relieving anxiousness but they also block pain and pleasure
senses, which means quality of life is altered.
Some of the reactions people have with anti anxiety
medications simply cannot be explained. Take tranquilizers as a
prime example. These drugs are used to help a person relax and
calm down but for some, levels of agitation and irritability
increase. There are even instances when a person would feel
hostile, mania, and rage, although rare. While dangerous side
effects associated with anti anxiety medication is extremely
rare, severe problems such as aggression and hallucination does
occur. For some reason, the oddest of all side effects tend to
affect the elderly, children, and people that have some kind of
developmental disability.
Because of the different side effects and with the goal of
helping people reach full health, doctors need to choose anti
anxiety medication and other treatment carefully, making this a
number-one priority. It is important that people understand the
job of anti anxiety medication is to reduce or eliminate
symptoms but it does not change the status of a person’s
health. This means the reason or reasons an individual has
anxiety or panic attacks have to be identified for complete
recovery. The challenge is that often, finding the true cause
is difficult. For the person taking anti anxiety medication, as
soon as he or she stops taking the drug, the anxiety or panic
returns. Therefore, in addition to medication, proper diagnosis
and treatment of the underlying cause is essential.
